Solderless vs. Solder Pedal Kits: Which Should You Build?

Both versions of Q-Tune are the same tuner: the same 2.8-inch screen, the same accuracy, the same features and firmware. What changes is how you build it. There’s one difference in the signal path, which we’ll cover below. For most people, the question isn’t which kit is better. It’s which kind of build you want.

Here’s how to tell which one fits you.

The short version

If you’ve never held a soldering iron and you want a finished pedal by the end of the evening, build the solderless kit. If you already solder, or you’d like to learn, the Solder Kit gives you the full hands-on version. Both end with the same Q-Tune on your board.

What the Solder Kit involves

The Q-Tune Solder Kit (Through-Hole) is the original. You get a bare PCB and the components, and you populate and solder the board yourself. That means:

  • A soldering iron, solder, and a few hours at the bench.
  • Some comfort reading a build guide and placing resistors, capacitors, and headers where they go.
  • A board you assembled joint by joint, which is its own kind of reward.

It’s an intermediate build. If you’ve finished a pedal kit before, you’ll feel at home.

What solderless means

The solderless Q-Tune ships with the board already assembled and flashed. Your job is the mechanical build: connectorized cables that click into place, a footswitch and jacks that screw down, and an enclosure that closes up with the hex keys in the box. There’s no iron and no flux, so there’s no cold joint to track down later.

Most people finish in 15 to 30 minutes with tools they already own. The electronics are done. What’s left is the part that feels like building something.

Under the hood: switching and headroom

The solderless kit isn’t the lesser version because it’s easier to build. Its signal path is a little more refined.

The two kits handle bypass differently. The solderless Q-Tune uses analog switches driven from the ESP32 on a dual ±9V supply. That gives you very quiet switching and more headroom in the buffer. The Solder Kit uses relays for bypass, which are mechanical. Switching can carry a faint click if you listen for it, and the buffer (a TL072, same chip as the solderless kit) runs single-supply biased around 4.5V, giving less headroom.

For most players and rigs, you won’t notice the difference. Both kits are quiet, and both sound like your guitar. But if you care about those details, the solderless has the edge in the signal path.

So which should you build?

Three questions sort it out:

  1. Have you soldered before, or do you want to? Soldering is a useful skill, and the Solder Kit is a fair place to pick it up. If that appeals to you, that’s your kit. If it doesn’t, there’s no reason to force it.
  2. How much time do you want to spend? The Solder Kit is an afternoon. The solderless kit is closer to the length of a couple of songs.
  3. What tools do you have? The Solder Kit needs a soldering station. The solderless kit needs a screwdriver and the included hex keys.

Both are legitimate builds. Two kits exist because builders are different, not because one is the real one and the other is a shortcut.

Whichever you choose, you get the same tuner: a bright chromatic display, fast and accurate pitch detection, true or buffered bypass, and USB-C firmware updates that keep adding features. The display, features, and firmware are identical, and the prices are close. You’re choosing a building experience.
